The Vancouver Chapter Leader plays a vital role in introducing digital literacy to boys from our
community.
About Black Boys Code
Black Boys Code is a national organization dedicated to closing the diversity gap in the technology sector by introducing Black boys to computer science and increasing their participation in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) fields.
At Black Boys Code these young men are provided the opportunities to strengthen their understanding in these fields, specifically computer science, through mentorship, industry exposure and intensive training. Our aim is to impact their growth and development through a cohesive learning experience and a blended learning approach.
Black Boys Code was established to be the outreach arm in the movement to introduce Black boys to computer science. We offer a practical introduction into programming through Exposure workshops, After School programs, Hackathons and Summer model that can be replicated throughout Canada and the city of Vancouver BC.
Overall Purpose:
The chapter leader oversees the local chapter team made up of a core team of 4 to 5 volunteer members who work on a variety of tasks including workshop planning, outreach to community groups and the tech community, general communication, and fund-raising.
The Chapter Leader delegates tasks associated with workshops to ensure student interests are addressed in programming, and events and activities are marketed to the community. This role is vital to cultivating strong relationships within the community which help to create a sustainable chapter.
Responsibilities:
- Build then oversee the local volunteer Core chapter team
- Recruit Core team members as needed.
- On-board/train Core team members
- Contribute to the development of educational materials with the curriculum development team.
- Participate in monthly leadership meetings as well as meet regularly meet with the Black Boys Code executive team to develop goals and strategies for the chapter.
- Plan Black Boys Code fundraising events
- Manage/work with Core team members to plan and host events
- Evaluation workshops and events to ensure all activities/services meets organizational objectives
Key Accountabilities
- Raise community awareness of the Black Boys Code programs
- Determine volunteers needed for each local event
- Cultivate strong relationships within the community
- Listen to parents and community leaders on community needs
- Plan chapter programs/events for the year and as required
- Identify workshop/event facilities
Skills, Experience & Qualifications
- Minimum 3 years’ people management and’ customer service experience • Strong communication skills both orally and in written
- Flexible/adaptable to change
- Detailed oriented
- Organized
- MS Office proficient
- Able to pass a Vulnerable Sector background check as required by your municipality to work with children
Hours: Average 5-6 hours per week (more time may be required during ramp-up/on boarding period).
