Black Boys Code Partners With Morehouse College To Expand Tech Exposure For Youth During Black History Month

Atlanta, GA – 20 February 2025 – Black Boys Code and the Morehouse College Computer Science Department are celebrating Black History Month by hosting ImaginAItion: Celebrating Black Excellence in STEM, a free, hands-on AI and digital storytelling workshop for Black boys aged 8 to 17. Taking place on Saturday, February 22, this event will introduce young participants to artificial intelligence and digital storytelling to promote their inclusion in STEM – fields where Black professionals remain underrepresented.
More than 50 young scholars will take part in this one-of-a-kind opportunity to explore AI through creative digital projects while being mentored by Morehouse students and tech industry leaders.
“To inspire and empower the next generation of Black tech leaders, we must do more than provide access, tools, mentorship, and training—we must ignite their belief in their limitless potential,” says Bryan Johnson, CEO of Black Boys Code. “Our partnership with Morehouse College is a defining moment for our organization and the communities we serve. Morehouse stands as a beacon of excellence, leadership, and legacy—precisely the standard of greatness these young minds are destined to reach.”
Student participants will develop practical skills in AI literacy and digital storytelling with hands-on support from Morehouse scholars affiliated with the Association of Computing Machinery (ACM), Advanced Coding Collective (ACC), and the Morehouse Tech Collective (MTC). These mentors exemplify the skill, opportunity, and vision of Black innovation, which will be modelled for young participants.
“We are on a serious mission in the Morehouse Computer Science Department to prepare young men to excel in computing and data-driven fields, but we realize that students arriving to campus with coding experience start college with a significant advantage,” said Dr. Alfred Watkins, director of the Atlanta University Center Data Science Initiative and former Computer Science Department Chair. “Therefore, partnering with Black Boys Code is a fantastic development and one that we strongly believe will have a lasting impact on the young scholars that participate.”
Event Highlights
The event at Morehouse College will bring together tech industry leaders, educators, and young learners for a day filled with:
- Digital storytelling workshops where students will craft engaging narratives about Black innovation
- Hands-on AI image creation, generating visuals that highlight historical moments or futuristic innovations in Black excellence
- AI-based video generation, that empower students to produce their own short AI-generated videos to showcase their creative storytelling
- A Creativity Showcase, where students will present their AI-generated projects to peers, instructors, and parents for an opportunity to win prizes
